Oakland County Road Commission crews were on the scene Sunday of a massive sinkhole that formed when a culvert failed over the weekend in a neighborhood in Oxford Township.
Craig Bryson, a spokesman for the road commission, said he a culvert under Wood Trail failed and caused a portion of the street to collapse.
Road crews pumped water out and away from nearby homes on Saturday and Sunday. The culvert carries the water underneath the road.
“We’ve got the water away from the houses and three or four pumps going out there now,” Bryson said. “The problem is a culvert under the road that’s failed. It’s not draining the water.”
Bryson said there’s a dam not far from the location of the sinkhole that has been closed. Road Commission officials are considering whether to tear out the road and replace the culvert.
