A new law could soon be signed by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) that would put speed cameras in work zones.
This means you could get a speeding ticket without being pulled over by an officer.
Over the next few weeks, the legislation will be revised by the Senate before it is voted on and heads to Gov. Whitmer’s desk.
If passed, the automated cameras will be installed in work zones to catch speeders without officers being present.
The first time a camera catches a driver speeding in a work zone, the driver will receive a warning in the mail.
If the driver speeds in a work zone again within three years of receiving the warning, they will be issued a $150 fine.
A third violation will be an additional $300 fine.
Officials say the legislation was introduced to make work zones safer.
MITA Vice President of Government Affairs Lance Binoniemi said, “In Michigan alone, we had 24 fatalities last year, and almost 8,000 accidents in our work zones. And so we saw this as an important way to protect our workers that are behind the orange barrels in an effective way to slow down speeders and to get them to pay more attention.”
