Rob Coppersmith, executive vice president of the Michigan Infrastructure & Transportation Association (MITA), issued the following statement following Speaker Matt Hall’s road funding plan announcement:

“We’re glad to see Speaker Matt Hall leading the way in the Capitol by announcing a plan that would help fund and fix Michigan’s roads. We’ve been underfunding infrastructure for decades, and this plan will help get Michigan on the right track.

“The progress we’ve made in recent years from the governor’s bonding plan and the boost in federal infrastructure funds will be lost if Michigan’s leaders fail to act soon. As Governor Whitmer said in her Road Ahead address, Michigan faces a funding cliff at the end of 2025. If we fail to act on funding and fixing Michigan’s roads now, we will go backward. After all, this is a quality-of-life issue. Do we want safe and reliable infrastructure to get to work, school, and vacation? Or do we want our roads and bridges to continue to deteriorate?

“We look forward to seeing quick action in the legislature on a long-term, equitable, and sustainable infrastructure plan to get Michigan back on the right track.”
