GRAND RAPIDS, MI — City officials have planned dozens of road work, sidewalk and bike lane projects totaling $26 million over the next year.

About 22 miles of roadway is slated for resurfacing and water main and sewer work, bringing the total miles of streets improved over the past seven years to about 536.

Of the $26 million, about $1.8 million is dedicated to sidewalk repair and construction projects across the city’s three wards.

The city will also improve about four miles of bike lanes this year. Last year, the city added nearly seven miles of bike trails in Neighborhoods of Focus and added more than 280 street trees.

The projects are funded by the city’s Vital Streets millage and state dollars. Voters approved the millage in 2014 that extended a local income tax levy for 15 years.

In the First Ward, sidewalk repairs are taking place in the general area bounded by Walker Avenue NW, Leonard Street NW, Alpine Avenue NW and Richmond Street NW through the end of June.

In the Second Ward, sidewalk repairs will be done within the general area bounded by Fuller Avenue NE, Michigan Street NE, Leonard Street NE and I-96. That work is scheduled for September through November.

In the Third Ward, sidewalk repairs will be done within the general area bounded by Eastern Avenue SE, Hall Street SE, Giddings Avenue SE and Franklin Street SE. That work is scheduled for July through August.

Property owners and tenants that will have repairs in sections of sidewalks that cross their driveway will receive a 48-hour notice of the upcoming work and expected duration. In general, officials say, the duration of any sidewalk repair in front of homes averages one week.

The city has outlined the roads projects it has planned from July to June 2022 in alphabetical order. Some of the projects may carry over into the 2022 construction season.
