DETROIT — If you plan on crossing the border next month, be prepared for backups on the Ambassador Bridge as the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel will close in October for 10 days.

According to the Windsor Star, Tunnel president Neal Belitsky said the closure is required as part of a $21.6 million construction project that will involve the replacement of the tunnel’s ceiling.

The 85-year-old tunnel is in need of a “full removal and replacement of 4,000 linear feet of the river section of the tube,” according to a recent council report. The concrete ceiling will be replaced during the 10-day closure.

The full closure begins on Oct. 20 starting at 8 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. on Oct. 30, according to tunnel officials. Several other closures are planned throughout the next several months as work is ongoing.
