CHARLEVOIX — A late night water line break on Monday in Charlevoix caused little service disruption because of the city’s infrastructure work last spring.

Charlevoix City Manager Mark Heydluaff said the break occurred around 11:30 p.m. Monday in front of the Paddleworks business, located at 204 Bridge St.

“We had water coming up in the street,” Heydlauff said. “We initially thought it was a water main break, but it turned out to be an abandoned service line.”

The service line was part of the old water main line that runs under Bridge Street. Last spring, the city installed a new water main in Van Pelt Alley during the reconstruction of the alleyway.

“We knew the water main under Bridge Street was unreliable and this was precisely why we installed the line under the alley,” Heydaluff said. “The line that failed was would have served that business.”
