Both houses of the Michigan Legislature approved a bill last week authorizing the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to research new designs and technologies for the state’s road projects.

“Everyone agrees that Michigan’s roads can be better,” Sen. Mike Shirkey (R-Clarklake) said. “We should leverage the incredible technological advancements we are seeing in the transportation industry to build better, safer and longer-lasting roads. Not only will they lead to improved driving experiences, they will
also help save taxpayer dollars.”

The bill is the result of collaborative efforts from Shirkey, the bill’s sponsor, MDOT, and data provided by the Roads Innovation Task Force report. If the governor signs the bill, it will make a series of reforms to existing rules that currently limits MDOT action.
