MUSKEGON, MI – An attempt by the city of Muskegon to reduce its wastewater treatment costs could cause west side residents to see smoke in their homes.
The city’s sewer and water department will be conducting smoke testing on sanitary sewer lines beginning Monday, Oct. 24. The testing is to determine where storm water is getting into the sanitary sewers from street, parking lot and building roof drains, said Muskegon Public Works Director Mohammed Al-Shatel.
The city spends about a half million dollars per month to treat its wastewater, and the city is trying to reduce that cost by getting storm water that does not need treatment out of the sewer lines, Al-Shatel said.
