Hot, muggy weather on a holiday means a trip to the beach will be in order for many of us today.
But be careful about where you’re dipping your toes.
High bacteria counts from stormwater runoff or other, unknown sources has closed or prompted contamination advisories at nine beach areas across Michigan.
The notifications were made as part of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality’s Beach Guard system. Each beach’s status is subject to change as new test results come in.

The Beach Guard site gives the public information on beach water quality across the state. It includes water sampling results and daily updates on which beaches are under advisories or have been closed.
The data covers more than 1,200 public beaches as well as 540 private ones.
HERE ARE THE NINE CLOSURES AND ADVISORIES:
Reed Lake, Oakland County – CLOSED
OAKLAND COUNTY, MI – Reed Lake is in Oakland County’s Commerce Township.
The lake has a public access area that is now closed because of contamination, according to testing from the Oakland County Health Division.
It’s been closed since June 19 because of high bacteria levels caused by stormwater runoff, according to the state.
It was also closed for five days in early June for the same reason.
Reed Lake, Oakland County – CLOSED
OAKLAND COUNTY, MI – Reed Lake is in Oakland County’s Commerce Township.
The lake has a public access area that is now closed because of contamination, according to testing from the Oakland County Health Division.

It was also closed for five days in early June for the same reason.
Campbell Lake – Robert Morris Park, Kalamazoo County’s Comstock Township – CONTAMINATION ADVISORY
KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI – This lake is in Robert Morris Park, a public spot in Comstock Charter Township in Kalamazoo County. It’s located on East H Avenue between North 30th Street and North 33rd Street.
This public waterfront spot also has disc golfing and picnicing areas. The water is monitored by Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services.
The contamination advisory was issued July 2 because of high bacteria levels from an unknown source.
St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach, Macomb County – CLOSED
MACOMB COUNTY, MI – St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach is located on Lake St. Clair in St. Clair Shores Township.
This beach closed July 2 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source. It’s the fourth time this beach has been closed since late May.
The water there is being monitored by the Macomb County Health Department.
Eagle Lake – Lakeland Estates in Oakland County – CLOSED
OAKLAND COUNTY, MI – Eagle Lake is located in Lakeland Estates in Oakland County’s Waterford Township.
Oakland County Health Division staff monitor the water in this private lake that has a public access area.
It was closed July 2 because of high bacteria levels from an unknown source.
Lake St. Helen – Richfield Township Public Fishing Site, Roscommon County – CONTAMINATION ADVISORY
ROSCOMMON COUNTY, MI – Lake St. Helen is a public fishing site in Roscommon County’s Richfield Township.
The water there is tested by the Central Michigan District Health Department.
The advisory went into effect July 2 because of high bacteria levels from an unknown source.
Lake Gogebic – Gogebic County Park in Gogebic County – CONTAMINATION ADVISORY
GOGEBIC COUNTY, MI – This beach in Gogebic County Park is located on the southwest shore of Lake Gogebic, off M-64 in Marenisco Township. In addition to a beach area, the park has a campground, bathroom facilities, picnic and day use area, fishing dock and boat launch.
The water there is monitored by staff at the Western Upper Peninsula DHD Main Office.
The beach’s advisory went into effect July 2 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.
Lake Gogebic – Lake Gogebic State Park Beach – CONTAMINATION ADVISORY
GOGEBIC COUNTY, MI – This contamination advisory covers the public beach at Lake Gogebic State Park, located on the southwest shore of the lake, on M-64 between M-28 and U.S. 2. In addition to the beach area there, the park features a boat launch, large picnic area and a playground.
The water is monitored by staff at the Western Upper Peninsula DHD Main Office.
The advisory was issued July 2 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.
Quarry Beach at Central Park, Schoolcraft County – CONTAMINATION ADVISORY
SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY, MI – This beach is located in Manistique in Schoolcraft County.
The Luce-Mackinac-Alger-Schoolcraft District is in charge of monitoring the water there.
The contamination advisory was issued July 3 because of high bacteria levels due to stormwater runoff.
It’s the second advisory issued this year for this spot. The other short advisory was issued in late May.
