Just when you thought road construction in Macomb County couldn’t get any crazier, state officials Tuesday announced a $90 million project that will close the entire span of westbound Interstate 696 starting in the spring.
The Michigan Department of Transportation said the closure will be needed to replace crumbling concrete on the freeway between Interstates 94 and 74.
MDOT spokeswoman Diane Cross said the expedited work must be completed while funding is available and before the nearby I-75 modernization project begins.
“It’s a use-it or lose-it situation,” Cross said. “We have a short window of time to get the work done before I-75 gets torn up near I-696.”
A total closure of one direction of the freeway will provide a safer work zone for construction crews and motorists, MDOT said in a new release. The work is expected to be completed by late 2018.
