Why are shoreline water quality problems still happening on Lake St. Clair?
About 300 area residents asked variations on that question to state environmental regulators, local health department officials and other leaders Monday, at a town hall meeting on the state of the lake.
State Reps. Peter Lucido, R-Shelby Township, and Kevin Hertel, D-St. Clair Shores, sponsored the meeting, held at MacRay Harbor in Harrison Township, for state Department of Environmental Quality and other officials to provide answers to residents’ questions – and also to give attendees the chance to sound off to regulators about the years of closed beaches due to high E. coli bacteria counts, and the shoreline muck that plagues some areas.
“It’s not getting better,” Lucido said. “We hear, ‘The levels (of contaminants) are coming down; this is happening.’ But we don’t trust the water… I want to walk away from this with an action plan that’s going to work.”
