Michigan Department of Transportation inspectors look closely at the metal welds, the wire ties and the concrete pours on the construction of the I-75 bridge over the Rouge River in Southwest Detroit.
But every once in a while, they pause and take in the spectacular view the bridge offers of the river below, the Marathon refinery and Ford Rouge complex and the Detroit skyline rising in the distance.
“In the morning, it’s really peaceful,” said Bill Erben, an engineer who is managing the $150-million project for MDOT. “One morning, I saw the Renaissance Center rising out of the fog.”
But most of the day and throughout most nights, the bridge is far from peaceful. The main contractor is Commerce Township-based, CA Hull. On a typical day, 120 equipment operators, welders, carpenters and other crew members are working the southbound lanes of the bridge, hoping to finish by “late fall.”
