Three bridges in lower northern Michigan will be cleaned to prevent damage to the structure.

Michigan Department of Transportation crews will begin cleaning the bascule bridges in Manistee, Charlevoix and Cheboygan counties Monday.

The cleaning of the US-31 bascule bridge over the Manistee River will begin in the afternoon of Monday, May 11 and continue into Tuesday, May 12.

The US-31 bascule bridge over the Pine River Channel in Charlevoix will be on Wednesday, May 13 and the US-23 bascule bridge in Cheboygan will be cleaned on Thursday, May 14.

The maintenance work involves removing road sand and salt from the structures to prevent corrosion.

There will be single-lane closures with traffic shifts between 12 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday and from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.
