KALAMAZOO, MI — Nighttime single-lane closures will occur on a commercial section of M-43 for most of July.

The Michigan Department of Transportation announced Thursday that it will start a second phase of construction on M-43, repaving the road between U.S. 131 and Kendall Avenue. Lanes will be reduced to a single lane from 7 p.m. to 6 p.m. starting July 5 and ending Aug. 3.

More than 30,000 vehicles travel this stretch of M-43 on an average day.

The $2.5 million project includes the reconstruction of sidewalk ramps and four railroad crossings. Crews already have finished reconstructing sidewalk ramps on the portion of M-43 between U.S. 131 and Kendall Avenue, and all construction is scheduled for completion by Nov. 3.

From Aug. 7 to Sept. 22, sidewalk ramp reconstruction will continue between Kendall Avenue and Pitcher Street. There will be daily single-lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Railroad crossings on Westnedge Avenue, West Kalamazoo Avenue, West Michigan Avenue, and North Park Street will require total closures, with detours posted.

Railroad crossing reconstruction is scheduled on Westnedge Avenue and West Kalamazoo Avenue from Aug. 14 to 25. Reconstruction of railroad crossings at West Michigan Avenue and North Park Street is scheduled from Sept. 11 to 22.
