Travelers through downtown Birmingham will have one more hoop to jump through for the next week as crews continue to install new water mains.

The city says eastbound Maple at Old Woodward will remain closed until May 11 so contractors can work on the installation of new water mains. Frailty of the old mains has caused issues recently, including leaks that temporarily closed the intersection. The city then decided to continue with an extended closure until that work is complete.

“By that time, we plan to have all buildings in the immediate area disconnected from the old water main system and reconnected to the new water main system, allowing for the old water mains to be abandoned,” the city wrote in an email alert.
