BANGOR TOWNSHIP, MI — About a week from now, hundreds of people will head toward the Bay City State Recreation Area to play in the sand and celebrate efforts to clean up the beach.

But today, the beach is closed due to high bacteria levels.

The Bay County Health Department issued a notice Thursday, June 15, closing the beach at the state park. It marks Bay County’s second beach closure of the year. South Linwood Beach Township Park closed earlier this month.

The state’s standard is 300 colonies of E. coli per 100 milliliters of water. Water tests from earlier this week show bacteria levels at 488.4.

Joel Strasz, director of the county health department, said a new test is being done today and anticipates the beach to reopen Friday, June 16.
