An estimated 900 gallons of sewage overflowed from a manhole near an abandoned mobile home park in Kalamazoo.

According to a release from the city of Kalamazoo, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 9 the Department of Public Services received a report of a sanitary sewer overflow at 3400 Stadium Dr. Staff stopped the sanitary sewer overflow at 2 p.m. Wednesday, but an estimated 900 gallons of sewage was discharged.

Public Services Director James Baker said another utility may have damaged a portion of the sewer, causing the pipe to collapse. A backup in the pipe caused the material to overflow from a manhole, where the spill was contained.

The site was cleaned Wednesday. Baker said no sewage material flowed into nearby apartments, a railroad line or Arcadia Creek.
