An estimated 1,500 to 2,000 gallons of sanitary sewage was discharged following a sewer main break in Fort Gratiot Thursday.

A resident reported the leak at the corner of Helen Avenue and Krafft Road to the township department of public works about 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

DPW Superintendent Greg Randall confirmed the sewer leak was caused by a crack on a 12-inch force main, according to a statement from the township.

The sewer leak was repaired at about 5:30 p.m. Friday. “At no time was any sewage contamination released into any waterways or streams,” according to the statement.

Clean-up will resume as soon as possible.

The leak was contained to the roadside ditch along Krafft Road between Velma Drive and Helen Avenue.
