A failed drain pipe created a large sinkhole at the corner of 5 Point Highway and Stine Road south of Charlotte. The sinkhole opened up Sunday afternoon. The Eaton County Road Commission believes the drain failed sometime in the last couple weeks.

The problem is believed to be with a metal pipe that connects to the the concrete pipe beneath the railroad tracks. The county drain commissioner’s office wants the metal pipe replaced with another concrete pipe. Crews will need a couple days to finish the job. There are fiberoptic cables in the area so the work won’t start until conditions are drier. The county will be working with the railroad company to make sure no damage is done to the tracks. Traffic will be blocked in the area until further notice.
