TRAVERSE CITY — The Michigan Department of Transportation will widen a stretch of M-72 in Kalkaska County to support traffic ahead of planned reconstruction in 2018.

Construction crews will temporarily widen 1.2 miles of M-72 from Baggs Road to McNulty Hill Road. The project is expected to cost $326,000, according to a release.

The widening will help maintain traffic flow during a planned reconstruction of M-72 from the Village of Kalkaska to the Kalkaska-Grand Traverse county line to begin in 2018, the release states. The wider road will allow for fewer lane closures during the project.

The work is slated to begin Monday, Sept. 25, and will require traffic shifts Monday through Friday, although some Saturday work is possible. It should be completed by Oct. 14.
