A water main break in the alley adjacent to Stoffer Plaza has prompted a boil advisory for businesses in the area.

City officials, in a written announcement on the break, said the boil water advisory applies only to the businesses Fedco, Illusions, Dr. Warren’s dentist office, Huntington Bank, and the Ralph and Mary Cram Medical Center.

The break occurred Monday, October 16, 2017. Crews are working to repair the line, and water service should be restored today, city officials said. However the precautionary boil water advisory will be in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday, October 19, 2017.

A boil water advisory is issued when their is a potential for contamination. A water line break causes lost pressure in the system, creating a potential for contamination.

The bacteria that generally enter a broken line generally not harmful and are common in the environment. However, preventive measures are warranted. Under a boil water advisory, water in the area should not be consumed, used for cooking, brushing teeth or even washing dishes — unless it is boiled for a minimum of one minute, then allowed to cool. Those in affected areas should consider drinking only bottled water during the advisory period.
