Parts of I-696 through Oakland County will be closed on some nights and weekends this year so road crews can rehab one of metro Detroit’s busiest freeways.

A $90-million overhaul of I-696 through Macomb County already was scheduled. The Oakland County work was added so both legs can be completed before a huge I-75 reconstruction project gets started in 2019.

“We are effectively touching every stretch of I-696 from I-275 to I-94,” said Michigan Department of Transportation project manager Alan Ostrowski. “It’s time and it’s ready.”

The closures are scheduled for nights and weekends to ease work commutes but they will affect drivers headed to places like Ferndale, Berkley, Royal Oak and the Detroit Zoo.
